If you’ve landed on this blog, you’re one of the many people who’ve decided to become more healthy and fit for the New Year. As we make new resolutions to become better than you were last year. You might be also wondering why something so good like working out can cause you pain. If you were anything like me, when I decided to make sure my health was a number one priority. I started to go to the gym more, I started to run more but with those activities. I noticed my body started to be in more pain. There are a couple of things we have to make sure we understand.

Not all pain is bad. When you start to workout you will get sore and sometimes this soreness can be really painful. During these times work on lightly stretching and making sure to warm up your body before you start your main workout. Did you know warming up for 5-10 minutes will make the muscles loose and prevent injuries. It’s important during these times to make sure the body is warm so the soreness will decrease. The cool down is important too!  Just like the warm up you do want to spend some time slowing down. This is especially important because you need your body to absorb as much of the lactic acid (the garbage your muscle produces as a result of working out) so it doesn’t get stuck in the muscles. If you do these two things your journey will be easier and won’t be so hard on the body.

The other pain I see in the office is because their body just isn’t ready to be pushed that hard. This injury can happen from barely walking 1 mile, or barely lifting any weight. Do not be ashamed that you can’t do this right now. It can be from your body being very deconditioned or there might be some sort of issue that was going on and the workout aggravated it. As we age our ligaments and tendons become stiffer so this makes our movement worse. If you are like me, you are wondering, why can’t I do this anymore or this shouldn’t be this hard. We have to listen to our body here and make sure we adapt our workout for our bodies now. But if you are starting to feel this type of pain, it’s important to find someone to help look at the way your joints are aligned. When your joints are misaligned it can turn off muscle function so then you are working a lot harder and this will lead to injuries. It’s important to work with a chiropractor at this stage so they can help guide you on what is causing the issue and to point you in the right direction. We’ve had patients go through your issues so we can help you get to your goals faster. At the end of the day, we just want you to stay on track with your New Year’s resolutions.
