What is Myofascial Release Therapy?

Myofascial release or known as trigger point therapy, is a manual therapy performed by a trained healthcare professional that focuses on releasing tightened and shortened muscles so that it can move more freely from the fascia, the surrounding connective tissues around the muscles.

When performed, myofascial release feels like a stretch with sustained pressure on the muscle belly to help separate it from the fascia. The goal is to improve range of motion of the target area as well as reduce pain.

When would I receive Myofascial Release?

Some of the most prominent signs or symptoms for myofascial tightness include:

  • Tight or “Shortened” muscles
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Muscular Pain anywhere in the body
  • Cramping or muscle stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • TMJ pain and tightness
  • Improve performance prior to engaging in sports
  • Improve musculoskeletal alignment and decrease tension prior to surgeries

Many people experience tightened or shortened muscles following any kind of injury such as sports injuries, traumatic injuries (car crashes), and even repetitive occupational injuries such as typing or lifting objects.
